Denise Frakes - 1975: A Cinematic Memory
I lived for 3 years once—with no computer, no tv, no cell phone. People I worked with were always buzzing about programs. They couldn’t believe I can do without—yes I grew up in a time when movies were about important things, people, places. I think Star Wars, Ghostbusters were the first fantasies. When I was 7, I went with my neighborhood friends- ( older girls) to see my first Beatles movie. My mom had gotten me my first pair of Bell Bottoms.
It was a scream fest and what made it great was that it was with the whole group—we felt so great to be there! Hugging each other.
I hope Hollywood starts producing more decent reality instead of constant AI fantasy.
Are Today's GenZs Flocking to the Movie Theaters?
Recent studies show that Gen Z is actually driving the movie theater's comeback as an intentional, social event. Why would the generation who could work a cell phone before they fully master potty-training want to watch a movie in a movie theater?
Motivation
While many Gen-Zers use streaming services, a number of things are driving them to theaters for a different kind of experience: 1. The Movie Theater Experience—This generation prioritizes experiences and social bonding over accumulating possessions. They started out with more things than their predecessors. A "sacred" escape from digital noise: Our world is full of constant interruptions from phones and algorithms—going to the movies is seen as a "radical" act of deliberate, focused attention. 2. Communal connection: Young people are drawn to the shared, collective experience that going to the movies offers.Willingness to pay for value: 3. Surprisingly budget-conscious, Gen Z is willing to spend money on live entertainment and experiences they’ll value for years to come.. 4. Participating in cultural moments: Events like "Barbenheimer" show that Gen Z wants to be active participants in a cultural conversation, which the theatrical experience fosters.
How Movie Theaters Attract GenZ
How are Theaters Attracting Gen Z?Loyalty programs:Chains like AMC are attracting young, avid moviegoers with programs that address the high price of tickets and concessions.Enhanced experiences:Theatrical events are being elevated to cater to Gen Z's love of social moments, including themed food, merchandise, and interactive content.Social media marketing:Theaters are using social media to generate buzz and create sharable moments that make moviegoing an event.Deja Vu - We’re Been Here Before…Editor’s Note: I had the same experience at 12 and 13, going to the movies, dressed alike and annoying adults, chatting, giggling and screaming (horror flicks) throughout most of the movie.
